Yet Another Truck We Don't Get - Ford Ranger Wildtrack

Yet-Another-Truck-We-Dont-Get-Ford-Ranger-Wildtrack.jpeg

First the Hilux, then Mahindra, and now the new Ford Wildtrack are on the list of totally awesome diesel pickup trucks that we cannot get in North America. This peppy, and stylin' little Ford pickup will get a 5 cylinder diesel. As usual, emissions standards are so stringent that our market is simply unattractive for manufacturers to try and bring their diesel pickups here. Also, to meet our strict regulations means you have to neuter the vehicle, and lose any fuel efficiency it once had.

For now we can dream. Maybe one day we will be able to enjoy a small affordable diesel pickup. Until then we are stuck with very large, and extremely expensive diesel pickups.

Both PickupTrucks.com and MahindraPlanet.com did some good coverage of the new Ford Ranger Wildtrack introduced in the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

Chevy vs. Ford Towing Showdown Results

Chevy-vs.-Ford-Towing-Showdown-Results.jpg

PickupTrucks just announced the results of the Chevy vs. Ford Heavy Duty Showdown they witnessed in Colorado. They picked out a brand new 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 LT four-wheel-drive crew cab and a 2011 Ford F-350 Super Duty XLT four-wheel-drive crew cab from dealer lots that had similar features and equipment. To match the rear axle ratios, they decided to test the one-ton trucks instead of the three-quarter ton HD pickups that they originally wanted to test.

PickupTrucks, along with Diesel Power Magazine conducted the test for Chevrolet. They tested it on the eastbound ascent from Dillon, Colorado to the top of Eisenhower Pass on I-70, a very tough stretch of road because of the high altitude.

They ran the Ford four times, the first two with only three adult males to match Chevy’s 220-pound curb-weight advantage and the last two with four inside. Ford’s best time was the last run at 10 minutes, 46.8 seconds with an average speed of 42.41 mph and a top speed of 58.5 mph. On the other hand, the Chevy Silverado’s fastest time was 8 minutes, 38.2 seconds with an average speed of 53.63 mph and a top speed of 67.38 mph. The Chevy was significantly faster than the Ford. It took the Chevy 28.56 seconds to go from 0 to 50 mph, while it took the Ford 42.02 seconds.

Price Increase for Heavy Duty Trucks to Meet New Fuel Economy Standards Not Too Bad

Price-Increase-for-Heavy-Duty-Trucks-to-Meet-New-Fuel-Economy-Standards-Not-Too-Bad.jpg

The National Academies earlier reported that newer federal regulations related to reducing emissions and improving fuel economy in HD vehicles can reach up to $15,000 per vehicle. Fortunately, it doesn’t seem like this is going to happen. The U.S. Department of Transportation and the Environmental Protection Agency are estimating costs of approximately $1,249 to $1,592 for 2018 heavy-duty pickups and vans for the added technologies needed to make these vehicles more environment-friendly. That entails a fifteen percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and improved fuel economy for diesel-powered HD trucks and a ten percent decrease for gasoline-powered trucks.

Changes planned include a five percent reduction on the weight of each vehicle, the use of eight-speed automatic transmissions, improved aerodynamics and installation of electric or electro/hydraulic power steering, as well as improved engine technology. Find out more at PickupTrucks.com.

U.S. Launch of Mahindra Trucks Not Happening in 2010

U.S.-Launch-of-Mahindra-Trucks-Not-Happening-in-2010.jpg

It was earlier reported that the Mahindra pickup trucks will be launched on December of 2010, but it looks like that won’t be happening either. The Associated Press reported that Anand Mahindra, Managing Director for the Indian automotive brand said they currently have “no date” for the U.S. launch. He declined to further comment on the matter, except for saying they are still interested in distributing their products in the United States.

U.S. distributor Global Vehicles USA filed a lawsuit against Mahindra for improperly terminating their distribution contract asking the court to prevent the distribution of Mahindra products because of this. If you want to keep up with all that has happened recently concerning the Mahindra pickup trucks, visit the Mahindra Truck Blog.

Who will win in a Duramax vs. Power Stroke Towing Showdown?

Who-will-win-in-a-Duramax-vs.-Power-Stroke-Towing-Showdown.jpg

Ford may have the most powerful diesel engine in the heavy duty segment, but GM says the Duramax will still outperform the Power Stroke when it comes to towing. Ford’s 6.7-Liter Power Stroke V-8 can rack on up to 400 horsepower and 800 pound-feet of torque and the Chevy’s 6.6-Liter Duramax V-8 is rated at 397 horsepower and 765 pound-feet. Still, Chevrolet is challenging Ford to a high-altitude, heavy-duty towing and brake test in the Colorado Rockies.

"Numbers on paper are fine. Let's go work these trucks in the mountains, and may the best truck win," said Tony Truelove, Marketing Manager of the Chevrolet Silverado.

Ford doesn’t want any part of it though.

"We challenge our trucks against the competition in grueling prove-out tests continually, and the customer gives us the results -- sales leadership year after year," said Anne Marie Gattari, Spokeswoman for Ford Trucks.

Chevrolet is going through with the Chevrolet Silverado HD vs. Ford Super Duty showdown and PickupTrucks.com and Diesel Power Magazine will oversee everything as an impartial judge.

Sound exciting? Watch out for more details in the coming weeks. Read the full story at PickupTrucks.com

NHRDA in Coeur d'Alene Idaho

NHRDA-in-Coeur-dAlene-Idaho.jpg

There are many reasons why Coeur d'Alene is one of the coolest places to live. We have a beautiful lake, we have Hudsons Hamburgers, we even have some pretty cool places to get coffee. Cd'A also has great big parking lots, and apparently, the NHRDA likes them.

As I was on my way home from a meeting this morning, I drove by this big gorgeous monstrosity of a truck full of diesel racing advertising glory and HAD to take some pictures.

Unfortunately, there was nobody around to interview, and if they were still sleeping in their bunks, they were probably afraid to come out and talk to the crazy four-eyed man with the camera phone.

Mahindra Says They Are Good Guys

Mahindra-Says-They-Are-Good-Guys.jpg

Mahindra & Mahindra finally posted a reply to all the bad press they've been getting for ditching their agreement with Global Vehicles. Mahindra claims that Global Vehicles let their agreement expire rather than requesting an extension like they had previously done.

Here is the Press Release from Mahindra & Mahindra.

Mahindra failed to address some of the larger issues such as purposefully delaying the vehicle in order to wear down Global Vehicles and nullify their contract. Instead, Mahindra's response was, "These statements are misleading. They also lack credibility when viewed against Mahindra Group's six decades of responsible business practice."

What do the fans say? "Just get the trucks here!"

Jeep Truck in 2012?

Jeep-Truck-in-2012.jpg

Well, it's been 5 years since the last time Jeep gave us a concept truck. Now, articles are popping up all over the web talking about a Jeep truck that is supposed to release in the last quarter of 2011 as a 2012 model pickup. One of the members over at Jeep Truck Forum mentioned that a friend of his recently sat in on a dealership show where Jeep wheeled out a yellow Jeep "Gladiator" pickup.

The last pickup truck offered by Jeep was in 1992 with the Jeep Commanche. If the new pickup is anything like the 2005 Gladiator concept, it will be a very warm welcome by pickup enthusiasts.

Sources say that there is a very good chance that the 2012 pickup will not look exactly like the 2005 Gladiator concept since it will be modeled after the new Wrangler.

More questions remain...will it be a diesel? Will there still be a side mounted spare tire? Stay tuned for more news!
